The looming bridge, Hutong, Beijing

Our rickshaw driver pulling us over the bridge, Beijing
On our way from the kindergarten to the Bell Tower I noticed that the rickshaw driver began pedaling faster to pick up speed. When I looked ahead of us I saw a small bridge coming up on our left. It was obvious that he was building up steam to make it across the bridge. It didn't work. Midway across the span he jumped off and began to pull the rickshaw with the assistance of the local policeman stationed on the bridge. No, Anne and I aren't all that heavy!

Don't take my picture! Beijing

Leaving the Bell Tower we found that our rickshaw drivers had
disappeared. We waited patiently for a few minutes for them to return,
but the waiting got the best of us. We proceeded to walk down a side alley
where I took the shot (left) of the tower and then stumbled upon
some local vendors selling their wares. The rightmost photo above
shows the vendor motioning that he was going to throw something at
me because he didn't want his picture taken. It's not just superstition,
some Chinese really don't like their picture taken.

This page has turned out much larger than expected, so let's go to another page to continue our visit to the hutong family ...
