Hawksbill Turtle at Sunset House Reef

For whatever unknown reasons Anne and I have always had exceptional luck in spotting some magnificent underwater life while diving at Sunset House. In 1992 we were fortunate enough to view a resident octopus several times, along with Fred (the friendly Nassau Grouper), squid and a few Tarpon.

This year we were equally fortunate. On one dive Anne spotted a nice turtle that accommodated my photography quite well. On another she spotted three good size Tarpon. All things considered, she did an excellent job in the spotting department while I was busy taking pictures.

When Anne first spotted the turtle he was nibbling away at the coral not far away. As soon as I approached he began to swim away. This first picture (left) was taken just as I approached him. As he began to swim away, upward toward the surface, I followed. It was a busy time with having to adjust the light and aperture settings on the camera, but I'm happy with the result.

OK, so I still have to practice taking shots of those silvery fish like the Tarpon. I haven't had that much experience with them and these three definitely didn't want to get to close. As soon as I approached them they turned and swam away with me in hot pursuit. Needless to say, after a short time I ran out of gas and they just kept going and going and going.

On our first dive at Sunset House we also spotted a Barracuda, but he was to far away and to fast for me get any pictures of him. Sorry, maybe next time.
